Madrid

Sunday arrived safely in Madrid! Long flight from Philly. Very tiring. We all took advantage of the nice weather to walk around Glynn's neighborhood, and down to the Parque Juan Carlos (park).

And then I ran up this really awesome hill! And kicked the children off the awesome ball.

Monday we took the train to Sol plaza and walked around the city. First stop, Plaza Mayor, then the Palace Cathedral and the Royal Palace of Real Madrid. The Palace itself was beautiful and had gorgeous interiors. The Armory was also awesome!

We stopped for a picture in Plaza Oriente:

Then we strolled through the gardens by the Royal Palace and the Temple of DeBod (Egypt). We finished the day at the Plaza de Espana. We ate dinner at Glynn's favorite sushi place.

Tuesday we slept in really late, but finally made it out and about. Started off taking pictures of the Plaza de Cibeles. All the major intersections have gorgeous plazas with monuments. Then we walked past the Plaza Independencia. We visited the Museo Thyssem, and saw several Monets, Picassos, Manets, Matisses, Cezannes, and more! We finished the day at the Botanical Gardens. This is Carrie (Glynn's friend) and me by some awesome art in the park:

Wednesday, we went to the Reina Sofia Museum and saw some really bizarre modern art in a gorgeous building. Then the Caixa Forum with some highly amusing modern art exhibits in another gorgeous buildings. Then we moseyed on to the National Library which was more a museum of the written word leading up to some of Spain's greatest minds. Then we went to the amazing Architecture museum which had some Really Cool Roman Stuff, and Michelle could have stayed there all day.

Then we spent the rest of the afternoon at the large Parque Retiro. Carrie and I rented a row boat and took turns rowing around the pond:

Mom and Rachel were tuckered out on the shore. Carrie and I walked around the park and saw more awesome monuments and flowers.

Thursday and Friday we headed out of town on the bullet trains to visit El Escorial and Segovia. El Escorial is known for its cuteness and the enormous Palace/Monastery which is just as large as the town. We toured the palace, the Basilica (church), and the crypts of all the Spanish Monarchs/Royalty below ground.

Afterwards we ate at a cute restaurant in town.

Friday's trip to Segovia hit a bit of a snag when we missed the morning train. Train stations are a bit like airports and we didn't get there in time. No worries though as Segovia is a very small place, and we hit everything inside of 4 hours. Segovia is known for the Roman Aqueducts than run through the town, and the gorgeous Cathedral and Castle bordering the town.

Saturday, very tired, we hit the airport to head home. We all made it back to our various destinations safely. :)
