Kickstarter: The Adventures of Ned the Neuron
The brain is fascinating, awe-inspiring and intimately linked to our lives. And yet…Neuroscience - the study of the brain and the rest of the nervous system - is rarely taught to kids before college. We think this is a missed opportunity, and one that we can do something about.Texts From Nancy Drew from The Hairpin

please just answer the question
you should probably bring some scissors
for the rope?
there appears to be some rope here, yes
are you tied up with it?
Ned look
it’s really hard for me to text with my hands all tied up like this
so please just stop asking so many questions and get over here ok

'You're going to have to take my word for it': Mitt Romney, tax returns, and a decade of evasion from MSNBC
A decade ago, Romney was trying to prove his eligibility to run for governor of Massachusetts. The state requires candidates to be a resident for seven years before running for governor. Romney testified to a state panel that this wasn't a problem because he'd been paying taxes in Massachusetts for years, even while living in Utah and running the Salt Lake City Olympics.
But Romney hadn't been paying taxes in Massachusetts—he'd listed Utah as his primary state on several years of tax forms. When asked about this by Boston Globe reporters, he said he wasn't sure what was in his taxes but he'd be "happy to look into it."
But after the Globe then sent Romney specific questions about his Utah residency, his campaign declined to respond because "he values his privacy and his wife's privacy." When reporters asked for the forms with financial information redacted and residency information visible, a spokesman told the Boston Globe: "You're going to have to take my word for it."National Organization for Marriage Unmoved by Infographic of the Bible’s Many Awful Marriage Possibilities from Jezebel
The infographic shows how biblical definitions of marriage include, though are not limited to, the following perversities: man + woman + concubines; man + woman + slaves; man + oodles of wives; and rapist + victim. All of that sounds like pretty damning evidence — straight from the most important textbook ever, no less — that perhaps the conservative case that marriage is strictly between a man and woman because, like, the bible is a thing has some holes.
A selective reading of the bible will yield pretty much whatever its peruser is looking for — that's sort of the point. The bible is really just a comprehensive reference book for moral dilemmas spiced up with a few beheadings, monsters and wars. It'd be almost impossible to show someone biblical evidence of anything because the bible is like a cloud — where one person sees a deity trying to test a person's faith, someone else sees an asshole trying to prove to his cosmic adversary that he can literally shit all over some sap named Job and the guy will still be super devoted to him. Like a dog.

Crazy Smart: When A Rocker Designs A Mars Lander from NPR
Steltzner's path to becoming team leader for this new Mars lander was hardly direct. Unlike many successful engineers, he struggled at school. An elementary school principal told him he wasn't very bright. His father told him he'd never amount to anything but a ditch digger, a remark he still carries with him years later.
"I was sort of studying sex, drugs and rock and roll in high school," says Steltzner. It wasn't just the long hair. "I liked to wear this strange Air Force jump suit. And my first car was a '69 Cadillac hearse. I put a bed in the back."
As Steltzner tells it, he was on his way home from playing music at a club one night when he became fascinated with the stars, especially the constellation of Orion. The fog of sex, drugs, and rock and roll lifted. He had to know all about the laws that govern the universe. The rocker wound up with a doctoral degree in engineering physics.

Divers say they have discovered a ship off the coast of Italy which they believe is about 2,000 years old.
The ship, which was found in the sea off the town on Varazze in the province of Liguria, is thought to be a Roman-era commercial vessel.

COMIC! Adventure Time: Marceline and the Scream Queens #2
Studios has done something interesting with their Adventure Time comics, which are based on the Cartoon Network series created by Pendleton Ward: The comics are kid-friendly in their own right, but BOOM! has tapped a number of indy comics creators with adult followings to work on the series. The result is something that’s fun for kids but a smart buy for adults as well.
Here’s a preview of the second issue of Adventure Time: Marceline and the Scream Queens; this story arc will cover six issues and is written by Meredith Gran (creator of Octopus Pie, which is not a kids’ comic), with a backup story by Faith Erin Hicks, creator of Friends With Boys. Issue #1 is on stands now, and this issue will debut on Wednesday, so this is a good time to check it out.
